goal is to increase the communicative competence of all the students
attending PHILLIPS School ~ Annandale · Therapists provide diagnostic and therapeutic speech and language services to students ages 6 –21 years old with moderate to severe communication disorders · Student’s language program relates to his/her environment and life experiences (classroom, apartment, lounge, school store, academics, off campus activities, community training programs, and of course, home) · Our S/L therapists are an integral part of the program as we: o Help our students to use newly acquired speech and language skills on a daily basis, and integrate these skills into their communication systems o Coordinate with classroom curriculum by reinforcing Science, History, Language Arts, Math lessons, Study and Research Skills and Career Education and serve as a resource for language materials and teaching strategies. o Use classroom curriculum to improve written expression, grammar, editing skills, reading comprehension and decoding skills. o Provide augmentative/alternative methods of communication including picture systems, gestures, environmental props, electronic devices, sign language o Promote social communication skills programs to enhance communicative effectiveness both in verbal and nonverbal interactions, in a variety of settings, with a variety of peers and adults o Work together with classroom staff, family services, counselors, vocational specialists, occupational therapists and behavior specialists to maximize students’ potential o Work with students in student council, the holiday program, yearly talent show, morning announcements, corresponding with pen pals, open mike reading program; anywhere and everywhere in the educational setting!
